PK and hero system

Killing an innocent paints your name, locks your PvP and takes hours to clear. Killing a murderer makes you a hero.

Killing another player has consequences. The server keeps a PK rating for each character, which paints their name for everyone to see and, if it goes past the limit, stops them from attacking any player.

On the other side, whoever hunts murderers becomes a hero.

How to attack someone#

Ctrl + left click on the other player. Without Ctrl you won't hit anyone by accident.

Two basic safeguards:

  • Nobody at level 5 or below takes part in PvP, whether attacking or taking hits.
  • Safe zone blocks everything. If you or the target are standing on a safe zone tile, the attack doesn't even fire: "Target in safe zone — PvP blocked".

How you become a PK#

A single kill already paints you. If you are Common or Hero and kill someone who is not a Murderer or an Outlaw, your counter goes to 1 right away and you become Warning (orange). Each kill after that climbs one more step.

Killing an already declared PK (Murderer or Outlaw) changes nothing for someone who is already a PK — and gives hero points to someone who is Common or Hero.

When a kill doesn't count#

Four situations in which the kill does not generate PK:

  1. Inside an event map — Blood Castle, Devil Square, Chaos Castle and the like.
  2. In a declared free PvP zone — the free arena, the Team vs Team arena, and Vulcanus between rival families.
  3. In self-defense.
  4. In a duel.

Self-defense#

If someone attacks you, you have 60 seconds to strike back and kill them without becoming a PK. The window also covers the party members of whoever attacked you — so if the whole group jumps you, you can answer all of them.

Attacking a Murderer or an Outlaw does not give them self-defense: someone who is already a PK gets no excuse for having been hunted.

While you have an active self-defense, you are "in combat" and can't start a duel.

The punishment#

The real penalty isn't losing an item — it's being blocked from playing PvP:

With the counter at 4 or more, you can no longer attack any player. The game warns you on every attempt.

In other words: whoever kills four innocents becomes a target and can't fight back. It's the harshest punishment in the system, because anyone can hunt you for free — killing a Murderer doesn't generate PK.

On top of that:

  • A PK with 4 or more kills is not accepted at the Imperial Fortress.
  • There is no loss of experience or zen on death, for anyone.
  • There is no item loss when you die as a PK. The system exists in the code, but it's off on this server.

How to clear your PK#

The rating decays on its own, and you speed that up by hunting monsters. The system counts points:

  • +1 point per second, just for being online;
  • + the monster's level for each kill.

It takes 7,200 points to drop one rating. Just waiting, that's 2 hours per rating. But hunting level 100 monsters, that's 72 kills — a matter of minutes.

In other words: the right way to clear PK is to go hunting, not to stand around in town. An Outlaw (three ratings above Common) clears their record in about 200 kills on a decent map, against six hours of waiting.

Being a hero#

You become a hero by killing Murderers and Outlaws. Each of those kills pushes your counter into the negative; with three, you reach the Hero rating and your name turns blue.

The hero rating also decays, faster: every 3,600 points you move one step back toward Common. So hero is a status you keep by hunting PKs, not a permanent medal.

There is no attribute bonus for being a hero — the reward is the name color and the fact that, by hunting a PK, you are removing someone who can no longer fight back.

Wanted#

Killing innocents also adds infamy: at 30 points the killer becomes WANTED and is worth zen to whoever takes them down — and taking down a wanted player does not make you PK. See Wanted.

The panel#

The ⚔ PvP panel shows your rating, the counter, how much is left to drop one rating, your kill and death stats, the duels won and lost, and the server's free PvP zones. The /pk command shows the summary in chat.
