Zen

The world's currency — where it comes from, how much the NPC pays, what you spend it on and what the cap is.

Zen is the currency that runs the entire server. You pay for repairs, potions, mixes, travel, VIP, guild and player purchases with zen. Everything that isn't cash is zen.

Zen here is scarce on purpose: hunting pays for repairs and potions with room to spare, but selling junk to the NPC earns little. The big money moves between players.

The cap per character is 2 billion. When you hit that number the excess simply doesn't come in — and a trade or sale that would push the other side over the cap is refused before charging, so the money doesn't evaporate.

Where zen comes from#

The zen pile#

30% of kills drop a pile of zen on the ground. On average, each kill is worth 0.01 × level² + 0.6 × level + 2 zen, by monster level:

Monster levelAverage zen per killSize of one pile
10918 to 42
302958 to 135
6074148 to 345
100162324 to 756
130249498 to 1,161

Each pile varies from 60% to 140% of the average size. The full table, monster by monster, is in Drops.

Only the pile gets bonuses:

BonusHow much
Excellent zen option on your gear+30% per piece, on the pile size
VIP (with an active subscription)+5% per level, when picked up
Guild+1% per level, when picked up

If the guild has a configured tithe, a slice of the pile goes straight to its vault.

Selling to the NPC#

The Sell all button, at the bottom of the inventory, sells the loose equipment the NPC accepts. The NPC pays 9% of the sale formula and never more than 20% of what the item costs in the shop:

[(level requirement or item level) × 350 + durability × 5] × (1 + item level × 0.5) × (1 + 10% Luck + 10% Skill + 10% per option point) × 0.09

The NPC does not buy: jewels, boxes, gems, excellent, ancient or socket items, +7 or higher, or anything from the Rare tier up (wings, for example). Those stay in your inventory. See Item value and NPC shops.

Auto-sell#

With a full inventory, the item you pick up:

  • if it is Common or Uncommon and the NPC buys it, turns into zen on the spot, for the same value as Sell all and with no VIP or guild bonus;
  • if not, stays on the ground — jewels, boxes, gems, excellent, +7 and everything Rare or better. Auto-hunt and your pet stop insisting on it for 1 minute.

Jewels and potions first go into a stack you already have in your inventory, even when it is full.

Offline progress#

It only counts if you left with auto-hunt on. When you come back, the server calculates up to 8 hours, limited to the auto-hunt minutes you still have left in your VIP day — and it spends those minutes. The zen is 3 kills per minute × the average zen per kill of the map's average level, with no bonus. No items or jewels come with it.

What zen is spent on#

ExpenseHow much
Potions and ammofixed price: potions from 150 to 1,300 each (in packs of 50 and 255), arrows from 300 to 1,200 — see NPC shops
Equipment repairproportional to the item's value; calibrated to stay between 6% and 15% of what you earn per hour; VIP gives up to 50% off — see durability and repair
Travel between mapsfixed price per destination
Chaos Machinefrom free to 12 million per attempt
VIP100,000 × level²
Creating a guild100,000
Buying from playerswhatever the seller asks

Where zen really disappears#

  1. Chaos Machine. Every refining or wing attempt charges millions even when it fails. See Chaos Machine.
  2. VIP. In zen, the price of each level grows with its square.
  3. Repair and potions. The fixed cost of hunting: little per hour, but every day. See durability and repair.

Buying from players doesn't take zen out of the game, it only changes hands — and it's where you get the item the Chaos Machine didn't give you.

Tips#

  • Before selling anything to an NPC, check the global market: an item with an additional option, Luck or Skill is worth far more between players than at the counter.
  • The sell-all button is handy, but it doesn't choose among what the NPC buys: review your inventory first.
  • To earn more zen, hunt the highest map you can handle: zen per kill grows with the square of the monster's level. See Zen: earning and spending.
  • Store zen in the vault before entering an event or a PK area.
